It has been called the Batmobile of the sea – and this £5million superboat is the latest weapon in the fight against drug smugglers. Its sleek curves, radar-busting structure and 100kph (60mph) top speed would turn the head of any self-respecting Caped Crusader.
The M80 Stiletto Stealth has been launched by the US military as one of its new generation of military vessels.
Its carbon-fibre construction and wave-reducing hull design enable it to glide across water that’s just 1m (3ft) deep. In case the sea is really rough and the chase gets particularly frantic, the forward cabin is fitted with shock-absorbent seats.
The 27m (88ft) Stiletto is used to transport commandos on missions to enemy shores – where they can disembark on a 11m (36ft) rigid inflatable boat stowed in the rear cargo area.
The 60-tonne craft, designed and built by California-based M Ship Co, can also launch an unmanned surveillance aircraft. It has already seen action in chases down the Florida coast and in waters off Colombia and the Bahamas.
However, with the British government cutting back on its Royal Navy fleet, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing the real-life equivalent of Batman and the Boy Wonder in our waters any time soon.
